Cosmic Speculation:
A Journey Across the Universe,
Through Fragrance

Indie fragrance dark horse Cosmic Speculation's newest line of scents is a divinely inspired trip through space and time. Drawing from the mysteries of the universe and the grand beauty of ancient art, the new collection transforms abstract wonders into a series of distinctive fragrance products for the body and home.

The brand's name is inspired by the Garden of Cosmic Speculation, a Scottish land art installation designed by Impressionist architect Charles Jencks. Taking The Big Bang Theory, fractals, black holes, and the double helix structure of DNA as loose reference material, Jencks created an homage to nature, science and art in a sprawling 40 acre collection of sculptures and landscape work.

To introduce their newest collection to to our BODY404 friends, we called Cosmic Speculation founder Grace to learn more about her philosophical take on fragrance creation.

In everything she creates, Grace has a unique and thoughtful approach that shows her appreciation for the mysteries of life. She believes that fragrance creation, like all creation, is a complex art form. For as long as humans have been able to perceive the world around them and beyond, they've been creating science and art to make sense of it all.

Whether an epic romantic tale or an ancient castle, Grace sees this appreciation for nature in everything we do. And this feeling of awe was never more apparent than the first time she visited the Garden of Cosmic Speculation.

In creating fragrances, Grace recognizes scent in many ways has a link to our subconscious. Smell is one of our earliest most primal senses, though its powers to transform our experience are often overlooked.

With Cosmic Speculation, Grace seeks to refine this sense to conjure the dynamic power of art, architecture and nature.

Cosmic Speculation's first and best-selling fragrance series, To Empty, is inspired by Greek and Roman civilization, the earliest ancient human civilizations on the European continent. This collection uses Greek and Roman mythology and legend as its creative force, namely the symbolic idea of the "wisdom of the gods." Each fragrance conjures specific characters of this time: Saint George the dragon slayer, Mars the god of war, and Ariadne the human princess.

The collection was an immediate hit, encouraging Grace to continue her mission of bringing the cosmic imagination into everyday spaces.

Their next series, titled Restart, series is all about pressing the restart button on materials that would otherwise be considered scraps. The collection uses recyclable extraction technology to extract reusable components from food residues and kitchen waste, and breathes new life into these materials by creating delicious-smelling, non-toxic fragrance.

Grace wanted this collection to honor the cycle of death and rebirth within the natural world. The past few years have been marked with a sense of loss and tragedy for so many, and these fragrances are designed to act as reminders of the strength and resilience innate in all of our beings. Embracing the vision of universal connection and reincarnation, the Restart series was a sort of aromatherpy 2.0.

"I am a crazy fan of the universe" Grace says, "My favorite movie is 2001: A Space Odyssey by Kubrick, which is regarded as a milestone of modern science fiction film technology." The film perfectly encapsulates the brand's sense of wonder at the universe.

Inspired by the film, the brand's newest collection, the Universe Trilogy, is a love letter to the cosmos. The first candle of the series is SPACE ODYSSEY, a layered spicy fragrance with packaging that recreates the classic 2001 moment when astronaut Ed White walks in space, a landmark moment in the exploration of the universe and the journey into the future.

Quality of ingredients and purity of scent is one of Grace's number one priorities in creating her handcrafted scents. In her process of refining raw materials, she aims to retain the original character of the natural ingredients she uses the fullest extent possible.

In her own home, Grace uses different candles to set different moods. In her study room, the Gaudi collection's Forest of Light has the perfect leathery floral scent for setting the mood for work. The wood tone and intricate details of the candle look perfect on desks, and are great for reading and thinking alone at night.

"During the day" Grace adds, "I usually pick something from the To Empty series." Fig scents are fresh and elegant and great for keeping a clear head. Before going to bed, she picks light, calming floral scents like lavender.
