CIRD: The Art of Interactivity and Deconstruction

Handbag and jewelry brand CIRD was founded by Scottie Xue in 2009 under these three key principles: a focus on interactivity and interchangeability; a preference for minimal circular shapes, and a commitment to using fine fabrics and delicate techniques. With their futuristic sensibility, CIRD brings functionality to beauty, interactivity and fun to its customers, and an ever expanding selection of patterns and colors to the fashion industry.

Xue hopes to create products that interact with his customers and offers as much space for independent choice and customization as possible. Deconstruction and the process of creating something new from something existing is central to the ethos of CIRD, it's bags fully interactive items that can be customized more and more the more you collect. CIRD's signature splicing methods allow users to take parts from items and attach them to others to create a truly customized experience.

Despite for lack of formal fashion training, Xue showed an early interest in the industry, falling in love with design while studying graphic design is an optional module in college. Learning to design on the fly, she plugged herself in to the world of design selecting more and more courses on the subject. After graduation she worked in a variety of different mediums developing artwork for exhibition before finally settling down into the development of fashion accessories. Her multidisciplinary background gives her the ability to use subconscious psychological information in her design and development process.

The interactive design concept of "deconstruction and reorganization"

Xue is deeply interested in the deconstruction of traditional notions of accessories in relation to the body. Her design philosophy is based on the idea that everything has many layers in each can we seen as a representation of something else. Through this she creates an environment where new ideas can be explored and discussed, and inspiration leads the conversation.

A great example of this is one of the brands most popular designs, a Separable double double sided half Moon bag. The purse is made up of two detachable smaller bags that can be spliced and regrouped into something new. As the brand continues to launch new designs, customers can continue to add to their collection and splice items together to create something entirely new. The key idea here being the breakdown of the traditional hand bag into its component parts, through which we begin to see items as more than their intended purpose.

Sustainable consumption in a different way

CIRD’s innovative approach has already begun to have an impact on the industry sparking conversations about what a bag should be designed for and whether or not it should be repurposable for different occasions. The discussion centers on rearranging reconstruction and the creation of something new from something old, especially topical as we all collectively begin to look at our overconsumption.

As the world becomes increasingly complex, it is important for brands to continue pushing boundaries and developing new concepts that grow with us, and CIRD is at the forefront of that new reality.
